Hosanna Dance Newsletter
Spring Edition 2020 ∙ 119 N Deadwood St ∙ Ft Pierre ∙ Artistic Director, Sunny Hannum
It's so good to have warm weather, birds singing, and green grass. The last couple of months have been incredibly hard on us all in so many ways but there have also been good side effects.
While some of you might wonder what in the world I am talking about, others will agree... Parents and children may possibly be spending more time together than ever before. You might have gotten some things done at home that you wouldn't have gotten done otherwise. Some of you might have been able to slow down a little - or not. 😊
It has been a good time to examine what is really important in our lives.
Josh, Sarah, and Sunny have continued to prepare and teach classes online and many classes are working on their dances for the end of year recital - "His story." Even though we won't be doing the dances in the studio this spring, our hope and prayer is that the dances have ministered to students and parents alike as they watch and practice at home. In addition to the online classes, you have separately recorded choreography videos in your parent portal.
Summer intensives have been canceled. Sunny, Josh, and Sarah were going to go to the Cecchetti International Teacher's Course in July at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Becca was also going to be in Holland attending the July, two-week, Student International Summer School.
We were also going to attend the summer Cecchetti intensive at Dance Gallery of Sioux Falls in June and that same week attend the inaugural gala performance of the South Dakota ballet and weekend workshop. The SD ballet has also had to postpone their performance.
Hosanna Dance has also had to rethink plans to do our summer dance camps in June so we will have to save Lion King for next summer.
Our winter show this year will be Narnia. We did Narnia several years ago (way back in 2012) so most of our dancers have not done it yet.
Good News: we have Steamboat Park Amphitheater reserved for Saturday, June 13. We hope to take the end of year recital outside. Some of the dances may be done on the grass while others may be done on the stage.
Details to follow as to how we would stagger the groups throughout the day to limit audience size. For those who can make it we do ask for you to be considerate of others and abide by the social distancing guidelines. Having the performances in the park will help allow families to spread out in their family groups.
For those unable to be there, we will live stream that day on our Facebook page.

We Encourage All Our Students to Prepare for Cecchetti Examinations
This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and thoroughly learn the terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them develop as dancers. And bonus, you get a certificate as a memory of all the hard work, study, and effort.
If you or your student(s) are interested in getting started with Cecchetti student examinations let us know.
⇒ Ballet III and up are eligible to start working on Grade 1. Examinations take a lot of preparation, study, and commitment. (Normally 1-2 years is spent studying per grade. More as you progress through the grades.) Examinations - read more about what to expect here
Our studio is affiliated with the Cecchetti Council of America. We added the Cecchetti syllabus to our classes in 2013. All teachers are professionally examined by the CCA to hold certificates in the Cecchetti Method grades.
Current Cecchetti Syllabus focused classes:
- A Cecchetti Grade V/Elementary class is being taught on Thursday nights from 5:30-7:00 pm. (open to intermediate & advanced level Ballet V students)
- A Cecchetti Grade VI/VII is being taught on Thursday nights from 7:00-8:00 pm. (open to advanced level Ballet V students)
Even if you are not interested in doing exams, attending these classes is an excellent way for ballet IV/V to get another ballet class in and work hard on perfecting technique and getting more one on one corrections. You can register for one of these classes online at https://dancestudio-pro.com/online/hosannadance
Hosanna Dance instructors attend all the Cecchetti intensives and workshops at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls and attend the International Cecchetti Teacher's Summit at least every other year.
