Spring and Summer Zoomed By!
No pun intended! I don't know about you, but I am in a bit of a culture shock - Ms. Sunny

We were able to keep our dancers plugged in and with minimal in studio practices we did a streamlined performance of "His Story" in Steamboat Park in conjunction with Upper Room Worship event for our end of the year showcase in June.

Ms. Sunny, Mr. Josh, and Ms. Sarah continued to assist Stephen and Lynde Rockwell with Upper Room Worship at Griffin Park in July and August. Josh, Sarah, and Becca Brusven performed "In Christ Alone" at the July event and Sunny performed "The Lion & the Lamb" at the August event.

Ms. Sunny taught line dance at the August 13 Fort Pierre "Summer Nights."

Ms. Sarah, Josh and Becca Brusven worked on Cecchetti Grade V through the summer and Josh and Becca passed their student examination for that grade in August.

Hosanna Dance Studio teachers held an open registration at the studio on Saturday, August 1, and then traveled to Sioux Falls the next day for a 4-day Cecchetti Intensive. Also attending the intensive was Becca Brusven.

Ms. Sunny has been taking zoom classes in Cecchetti Grade VII since May. She began teaching the Ballet V dancers in August with the purpose of beginning choreography for "Through the Wardrobe" (Narnia) and also to begin casting.
She was informed in August that the high school would not be able to let outside groups in to use the theatre this year so we won't have a December show. She was able to book Riggs Theatre for March 2021 - keep the weekend of March 5/6 in your calendar for our Narnia show. Also be aware the month prior would have runthrough rehearsals pending how the situation looks

We Encourage All Our Students to Prepare for Cecchetti Examinations

This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and thoroughly learn the terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them develop as dancers. And bonus, you get a certificate as a memory of all the hard work, study, and effort.

If you or your student(s) are interested in getting started with Cecchetti student examinations let us know.
⇒ Ballet III and up are eligible to start working on Grade 1. Examinations take a lot of preparation, study, and commitment. (Normally 1-2 years is spent studying per grade. More as you progress through the grades.)  Examinations - read more about what to expect here

Our studio is affiliated with the Cecchetti Council of America. We added the Cecchetti syllabus to our classes in 2013. All teachers are professionally examined by the CCA to hold certificates in the Cecchetti Method grades.

Hosanna Dance instructors attend all the Cecchetti intensives and workshops at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls and attend the International Cecchetti Teacher's Summit at least every other year.

Spring Edition 2020 119 N Deadwood St Ft Pierre Artistic Director, Sunny Hannum

Look Up for better days ahead!

It's so good to have warm weather, birds singing, and green grass. The last couple of months have been incredibly hard on us all in so many ways but there have also been good side effects.
While some of you might wonder what in the world I am talking about, others will agree...  Parents and children may possibly be spending more time together than ever before. You might have gotten some things done at home that you wouldn't have gotten done otherwise. Some of you might have been able to slow down a little - or not. 😊
It has been a good time to examine what is really important in our lives.

Josh, Sarah, and Sunny have continued to prepare and teach classes online and many classes are working on their dances for the end of year recital - "His story." Even though we won't be doing the dances in the studio this spring, our hope and prayer is that the dances have ministered to students and parents alike as they watch and practice at home. In addition to the online classes, you have separately recorded choreography videos in your parent portal.

Summer intensives have been canceled. Sunny, Josh, and Sarah were going to go to the Cecchetti International Teacher's Course in July at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Becca was also going to be in Holland attending the July, two-week, Student International Summer School.
We were also going to attend the summer Cecchetti intensive at Dance Gallery of Sioux Falls in June and that same week attend the inaugural gala performance of the South Dakota ballet and weekend workshop. The SD ballet has also had to postpone their performance.

Hosanna Dance has also had to rethink plans to do our summer dance camps in June so we will have to save Lion King for next summer.

Our winter show this year will be Narnia. We did Narnia several years ago (way back in 2012) so most of our dancers have not done it yet.

Good News: we have Steamboat Park Amphitheater reserved for Saturday, June 13. We hope to take the end of year recital outside. Some of the dances may be done on the grass while others may be done on the stage.
Details to follow as to how we would stagger the groups throughout the day to limit audience size. For those who can make it we do ask for you to be considerate of others and abide by the social distancing guidelines. Having the performances in the park will help allow families to spread out in their family groups.
For those unable to be there, we will live stream that day on our Facebook page.

About the Instructor:
Stephen Rockwell grew up in Japan and studied many forms of martial arts including Judo, Shotokan Karate, Akido, Tae Kwan Do, and Wing Chun Gung Fu.

Wing Chun Gung Fu is a form of self-defense, also known as "beautiful springtime", that requires quick arm movements and strong legs to defeat opponents. Softness (via relaxation) and the performance of techniques in a relaxed manner are fundamental to Wing Chun.
According to Ip Man, "Chi Sau in Wing Chun is to maintain one's flexibility and softness, all the while keeping in the strength to fight back, much like the flexible nature of bamboo".
Stephen studied Wing Chun Gung-Fu with Master Augustine Fong who studied with late grandmaster Ip Man.
Notable practitioners of Wing Chun include Yuen Kay Shan, Ip Man, Ip Chun, Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Robert Downey Jr, and Sum Nung.

Think Praise & Worship!

As I am working on this newsletter on a snowy Saturday, I am already looking ahead to spring.

We were planning the first Upper Room Worship event to be held at Hosanna Dance studios which had to be canceled due to the snowstorm. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 18. More info > Here

Nutcracker

It was exactly a month ago that we had scheduled our Greatest Gift of All performances only to have to postpone a day due to a snowstorm. We performed the next day but coordinating with the event location in time affected our audiences. The dancers all made it and enjoyed performing after all the preparation.

December 14 our dancers (Ballet 5, 4, and 3) performed five of the Nutcracker dances at the Capitol. We took Waltz of the Flowers, and the nations' dances of Spanish, German, Jewish, and USA Western. The modern class also performed a piece from our repertoire, For Unto Us, as a finale.

Other Fall Activities

On October 17, Hosanna Dancers participated in the 50 State Tent Worship event held at the Ramkota Conference Center. Dancers performed Oceans and You Say.

Ms. Sunny, Mr. Josh, and Ms. Sarah attended the Cecchetti Fall Liaison Teacher’s workshop at Dance Gallery October 25-27 which was concurrent with the SD Dance Network Conference in Sioux Falls. Dancers attending the Dance Network were Becca Brusven, Jessica Saunders, and Walter McVey. Because the workshops were close together, dancers were able to attend some of the Cecchetti classes as well.

Josh, Sarah, and Sunny attended the Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) workshop on November 2 in Sioux Falls. All three received their PBT certification. This is a physical training program using fit balls, exercise bands, and fusion balls to help dancers understand how to access different muscle groups. It is a very useful tool for teachers to help their dancer improve technique, muscle memory, core stability, weight placement, and alignment.

Sunny, the Easters, and the Brusvens traveled to Sioux Falls on Sunday, December 8, to see Dance Gallery’s Nutcracker.

Ms. Sunny is now a certified Cecchetti Teacher after passing her Teacher’s Grade VI exam on October 24. Grade VI (professional intermediate) is a challenging level and the exam is 2.5 hours long. Much coaching preceded the exam. Ms. Sunny had begun to prepare for it in 2017 when she was diagnosed with cancer and continued to work on it through her treatment and recovery. Praise the Lord! He is good and His mercy endures forever.

Two New Classes starting January 13.
- Adult Ballet: Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm
