It has been a while since we have had a newsletter so we have a lot of news for you.

Our March 19, 2022, performance of "The Deliverer" was over the top good. Thanks to all the students' hard work, my partners, Josh and Sarah Easter, and all the parents and others who helped. We had done this show twice in the past and it just got better and better. I hope our Sleeping Beauty ballet next spring will be even better than the 2006 and 2013 shows.

When we select a show to do, we base it on the makeup of our registrations for the year. That means each time we do a show, we may have to adjust or change it to fit the students' abilities, age, and dance level.

Summer - June

Becca Brusven attended the 11-day South Dakota Ballet's Summer Intensive in Sioux Falls during the last two weeks of June. She was invited to be a trainee for the SD Ballet and thus got to take classes with the main company. All the intensive attendees got to participate in the opening number with the SD Ballet.

Summer - July 

The studio took the month of June off and then Ms. Sunny and Becca Brusven taught an Encanto dance camp for two days in July. Josh assisted with crafts and Ms. Sarah found a fun butterfly craft for us to do. Ms. Becca taught a lovely character dance to "The Dysfunctional Tango" from the Encanto movie.

Mr. Josh and Ms. Sarah attended a week-long Lester Horton Teacher’s Pedagogy training from the Alvin Ailey School with Ana Marie Forsythe and other instructors in July.

Ms. Sunny taught four Cecchetti Grade 1 exam classes for students planning to take their exams in Sioux Falls the last week of July. Rae McVey, Walter McVey, Kourtney Hughes, and Shawnie Zeeb all took their Cecchetti Grade 1 exams and passed.

The last week of July, five students attended the Cecchetti Summer Intensive at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls with their teachers Ms. Sunny, Mr. Josh, and Ms. Sarah.
Ms. Becca attended the Cecchetti Intensive on scholarship and was given a solo from the ballet Paquita to perform in the showcase at the end of the workshop. The showcase was outdoors at the Washington Pavillion. Argus Leader article

Summer - August 

Tuesday nights in August our older dancers took a ballet class and learned some of the variations from Sleeping Beauty including the Song/Canary Fairy, Lilac Fairy, Violente (nicknamed the Finger Fairy), Candide/Crystal Fountain Fairy, and one of Prince Désiré’s variations.

Fun fact and a little history:
The original cast of the Sleeping Beauty Ballet had Enrico Cecchetti as Carabosse (the evil fairy) and the Bluebird (he created those roles), while his wife was the Queen. Yes, that is our Maestro Enrico Cecchetti from whence came the Cecchetti method. Choreographer Marius Petipa was the ballet master of the Imperial Mariinsky Ballet (known as the Kirov during Soviet years as Kirov was a friend of Stalin).

We Encourage All Our Students to Prepare for Cecchetti Examinations

This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and thoroughly learn the terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them develop as dancers. And bonus, you get a certificate as a memory of all the hard work, study, and effort.

If you or your student(s) are interested in getting started with Cecchetti student examinations let us know.
⇒ Ballet III and up are eligible to start working on Grade 1. Examinations take a lot of preparation, study, and commitment. (Normally 1-2 years is spent studying per grade. More as you progress through the grades.)  Examinations - read more about what to expect here

Our studio is affiliated with the Cecchetti Council of America. We added the Cecchetti syllabus to our classes in 2013. All teachers are professionally examined by the CCA to hold certificates in the Cecchetti Method grades.


Hosanna Dance instructors attend all the Cecchetti intensives and workshops at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls and attend the International Cecchetti Teacher's Summit at least every other year.

Think Spring!

Cinderella is behind us and what an experience it was. I think it drained us all and left us needing a week off. We had not planned for that, so we were at the studio doing classes for the few who showed up.

I am very proud of the Hosanna Dancers and all the hard work they did getting ready for Cinderella. When asked to put some acting into their parts, they rose to occasion with great facial expressions and pantomime. It was definitely dance theater and the audience loved it.

We had thought our spring, end of the year, in-house performances would be some of the dances from Cinderella but the Lord made it real clear to me that He wants another worship dance performance. He began giving me songs to use the very next day. Save the date: June 1!

Gracie Zeeb will be examining in Sioux Falls for Cecchetti Grade IV this spring. Gracie has been working on this grade since the spring of last year and her technique definitely shows it.

The Cecchetti Intensive in June will be earlier: June 8-9. Cecchetti examinations will be held prior to the intensive and notification has to be given by April 1 for those who are approved. We currently have two preparing for June exams and one for the coming fall.

Pas de deux class has ended until fall. This class has helped our upper-level dancers learn some of the basics of partnering as well as strengthen their pointe work. We hope to also offer a variations class in the fall.

Two pre-pointe students have been approved for beginning pointe. They are Sheridan and Bellah Nickolas. This will require appointments at Dance line in Sioux Falls on a Saturday. Ms. Sarah and/or Ms. Sunny will accompany the girls for their fittings.

The theme for the Summer Dance Camps will be Frozen on the weeks of July 8-11 and July 15-18. 

Nutcracker classes and practices will begin Tuesday nights in August for Ballet V  dancers and we will also begin Nutcracker casting in August!
Nutcracker performances will be during the after Thanksgiving weekend.

Happy New Year!

December is behind us with a night of Christmas for family and friends -- we had two 45-minute, in-house performances of Christmas dances. Some of the dances were performed again the next day at the Capitol.

We have gotten a good start on some of the pas de deux and couples dances for Cinderella. Also, we have begun work on the lead dancers’ solo choreography and a start on Ballet V dances and Ballet 1.

Costumes have begun coming in and my living room looks like Christmas has never left with boxes everywhere. With barely eight weeks left before performances, the push will be on as soon as classes resume January 3. Run-throughs for all classes starts the beginning of February - all Monday’s in February for all classes.

We still need one more guy for the ballroom couples but may have found him over the break. Owen Bremser has returned to help us out with this show and another former dancer may join soon.

Once again, we have been asked to dance for a Christian Concert on Friday, January 18^th,  at the Ramkota organized by Stephen Rockwell.  We will be taking “Breath of Heaven” and “For Unto Us.”

Students preparing for 2019 Cecchetti exams are Jessica Saunders for Grade III, Gracie Zeeb for Grade IV, and Becca Brusven for Grade V. Extra classes are being taught for those preparing for exams.

Pas de Deux class will end at the end of February and be resumed next fall. This class has helped our upper-level dancers learn techniques of partnering as well as strengthen their pointe work.

After our Cinderella performances, we will be assessing our pre-pointe students to see who might be eligible to be fitted for pointe shoes. This will require appointments at Dance Line in Sioux Falls on a Saturday. Ms. Sarah and Ms. Sunny will accompany the girls for their fittings.

We are planning summer musical theater dance camps again. Watch for more information closer to spring. This year’s themes will center around “Frozen,” which was a popular show for us two years ago.

We will return to the Nutcracker once again for our 2019/2020 winter show.

🧹💃 Cinderella dates🕰🥿👑 - Saturdays in January are required for all main/titled roles and understudies in Cinderella to work on Act I of the ballet. February Saturdays for main roles and their understudies to cover Act II. - Mondays nights in February are for ALL CLASSES. For run-throughs at the studio, dancers need to be dressed in class clothes and ready to start at 5:30 pm. PreBallet can show up at 5:45pm. Run-throughs are scheduled to go til 8pm. - Dress Rehearsal for ALL CLASSES is Friday, March 1, at Riggs Theatre from 5:30-8:00pm. Treat as a performance with costumes, tights, shoes, accessories, hair, etc. Make sure your hair is in a proper ballet bun. A hair tie only will not suffice. You must use bobby pins or hairpins. - Cinderella performances are on Saturday, March 2. ~ THEATRE PERFORMANCES ~ Dress Rehearsals at Riggs Theatre are 5:30-8:00 pm Be at the theater by 5pm. Find your dressing room and get organized. Be on stage in your class clothes - leotard, tights, shoes, and secure ballet bun - by 5:30 for notes and warm-up. Costumes will be put on after warm-up. And REMEMBER treat dress rehearsal as a performance. Wear the correct costumes, tights, undergarments, shoes, hair, etc. This is where you make sure everything works, looks good, and you can sort out any mid-performance costume issues. Keep costumes off the floor!! Read PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES. Performances at Riggs Theatre at 2 p.m. afternoon matinee & 7 p.m. evening performance Dancers: Be at the theater at noon for the first performance. Be back at the theater at 5:00 for the second performance. Be at the theater at 12:00 pm to get organized in dressing rooms, do hair, makeup, etc. Be on stage by 12:30 pm for notes and warm-up and any extra practice that you may need Costumes on at 1:30 pm. Curtain at 2:00 pm. Break 3:30-5:00 pm Be back at the theater at 5:00. Make sure everything you need is reorganized and in its place. Keep the dressing rooms picked up. If you haven't done so this would be a good time to put recital gifts for classmates out on the tables. Makeup/hair redo or touch-ups at 5:00 pm. Be on stage in class clothes at 5:30 pm for notes and warm-up. Costumes on at 6:30 pm. Curtain at 7:00 pm. After: Check the gift tables out front, pick up all your costumes/accessories/shoes, pick up after yourself. Return borrowed items. Pack up! See you at Perkins!

A Happy Belated New Year!

Here we are already a month into the New Year and we haven’t brought you up to date on our spring plans. We are doing our spring performances in the studio on our in-house stage. This is another exciting new experience for us and one of the reasons we relocated to the new space.

As some of you know, we have struggled every spring finding a date early enough for our missions bound students and when Riggs Theater is available - a near impossibility. This fact definitely affected our casting for Esther last spring.

We have some work to do on the stage area to prepare the surface and need to add some lighting but will gear our performance to be simpler than the lavish one we do for our dance theater performances at Riggs Theater.

We plan to do a performance entirely of worship dances. This performance has been on our bucket list for a while and should fit perfectly on our studio stage. The bonus will be having worship dances available for any church or concert that want us over the summer.

We have not yet picked our next winter show but it will once again be a dance theater performance at Riggs Theater. We are currently researching possibilities including Cinderella. We were very pleased with the response to our “Greatest Gift of All” performances in January. They were very well received with bigger audiences than in the past in spite of a cold weekend.

Todd Thompson graced us with his beautiful photography during dress rehearsal and we will be preparing a display of his photos soon. Our faithful videographer came out of retirement to give us very good video of the matinee performance. A showing was held for Ballet IV and V on January 20th at the Hilmoe’s home and refreshments were served.

We offer Cecchetti syllabus classes for those interested in progressing as a dancer and who take more than one ballet class a week. We have a Grade IV class going and would like to have a Grade I class for those that would like to get started with Cecchetti examinations or would like to work on perfecting their technique. So please sign up! Ask Gracie Zeeb and Becca Brusven about how Cecchetti has helped them become better dancers!

Ms Sunny, Josh, and Sarah will be attending the Cecchetti Intensive June 17-21 at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls. Parents, we will let you know when registration opens. When information and brochure are available they can be found by going online to www.dancegallerysd.com/workshops.
We usually rent a couple rooms at Home 2 Suites and split the cost. Tuition to the workshop is very reasonable.

We have added a few new classes since the show. A Cecchetti Grade IV class is being offered Monday nights at 5:30 pm. On Tuesday night is a Variations class at 5:30pm. Adult Ballet is being offered Thursday night at 7pm and Adult/Youth Line Dance at 7pm Friday night. On Saturday at 10 am a Strength & Conditioning class. In order to attend the Friday or Saturday classes please contact us in advance to register.

It's Nutcracker Time!

Josh, Sarah, and I have been preparing the cast list and costume selections in between working on the studio expansion project. Although we taught a few worship dance classes in July, this project at 119 Deadwood, Fort Pierre has kept us occupied. We must admit that Chuck Easter has been right there beside us on his hands and knees. Yes, we were praying and sanding and removing tile and thick asphalt tile glue. We also worked on removing very old, dirty fiberglass insulation from the large studio. Thanks to Brad Bruns we were able to finish.

In May, Hosanna Dance became Hosanna Dance LLC as Ms. Sunny, Josh, and Sarah formed a partnership. We hired contractors to work on the renovation project and if our floor sander gets his job done, we should be able to move the latter part of October.

The new studio space is amazing and will have an in-house stage for spring performances. No longer will we have to wait on Riggs. We will do a more recital type show in-house in May.

We will be growing into this space and there will still be much we want to do to it over the next year. But we are super excited about the possibilities there will all the space and two classrooms.

June 18-22, Josh, Sarah, and Ms. Sunny traveled to Sioux Falls for the Summer Cecchetti Intensive at Dance Gallery. Attending the workshop with us were Gracie Zeeb and Jessica Saunders.

Coming up October 13-15, Hosanna Dance will be attending the Dance Network SD Conference in Sioux Falls. Then November 4-5, Hosanna dancers will be attending the Fall Cecchetti Seminar at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls.

Josh, Sarah, and Ms. Sunny have been working on the preliminary cast list and costuming for the Greatest Gift of All. The list on this newsletter is subject sometimes to change and for a few of the dances we will be changing choreography. Until we know which choreography we are using, we will not be able to name the dancers because we don't know how many will be doing the dance. You will see a "TBA" next to those dances.

Happy New Year!

We are still basking in the afterglow of two successful performances of "A Snow White Christmas" but have already begun preparing our minds for "Esther." We did this show six years ago (Spring 2010) but are planning on doing an entirely new version this time around. The Esther we did in 2010 had eight guys in it, but only one male dancer. We only have two older male dancers right now and had to call on Brad Bruns to do a major role in the December show of Snow White. Brad stepped in as he has in previous shows and did a fine job of portraying the Hunter in Snow White. I think he even surprised himself as he did some dance movement and partnering. Way to go, Brad! If anyone has a brother, father, or husband who is good at acting, we will have the following roles available: priest, scribe, assassin, Esther's friend, and two royal guards. I used the holiday break to finally get extra costumes and props put away from the December show, the costume closets reorganized, Christmas decorations put away, studio cleaned, and a new display done for "A Snow White Christmas." My wonderful assistants, Josh and Sarah, traveled to Florida with their parents to see relatives. That meant I got to teach their classes Thursday, December 22nd. I especially enjoyed teaching a jazz and tap class. The entire month of December was a relaxing month for Josh, Sarah, and I as we taught classes to Christmas music and some dances from the past. It was fun for everyone, teachers and students alike. Ms. Sunny, Ms. Sarah, and Mr. Josh will be traveling to Sioux Falls on January 6 to take students to pointe shoe fittings and to see Dance Gallery's performance of Coppelia on Saturday, January 7. Dancers traveling to Sioux Falls to get their first pair of pointe shoes are Mackenzie Sarratt, Gracie Zeeb, Jessica Saunders, and Olivia Chase. Make sure you take a look at the calendar. Several new students will be joining classes in January in every level except Ballet V. We will begin choreography in January and also resume Cecchetti technique studies in preparation for March and June exams. (Hosanna Dance is the only school in Pierre that offers this method that encourages students to be nationally examined. Greetings, Hosanna Dancers & Parents!

We would like to go on record to say two months is not enough time to get a children's storybook ballet ready. Consequently, we will not be able to start run-through rehearsals until Monday, November 21. Please check the calendar for important information.

Another important date change is the date of our spring show. Riggs Theatre has informed us that they are not letting anyone book the theater in May. They are closing it for maintenance. This has forced us to schedule our performance of Esther for June 9 & 10, 2017. Dress rehearsal will be June 9 and there will be two performances on June 10.

Josh Easter, Sarah Easter, and Ms. Sunny have been to two dance workshops in October: the Dance Network of South Dakota Convention in Rapid City on October 7 & 8, and the Northern Plains Cecchetti Council Fall Workshop in Sioux Falls on October 21-23.

Hosanna Dance students Becca Brusven and Rae McVey attended the Rapid City workshops where they got to take classes from Repertory Dance Theater Company from Salt Lake City. This excellent modern dance company taught classes in modern, jazz, ballet, and hip hop.

Deni and Gracie Zeeb and Rae McVey were the Hosanna Dancers attending the Sioux Falls workshop with Ms. Sunny, Ms Sarah and Mr Josh. Ballet classes were taught in the first six grades of Cecchetti Technique, jazz, modern, musical theater, hip hop, lyrical, clogging, pointe, and theraband.
Three Hosanna Dance students are preparing to take their Cecchetti Grade II exam in March. They are Deni Zeeb, Gracie Zeeb, and Becca Brusven.

Josh and Sarah Easter are preparing to take their Cecchetti Grade IV Teacher's exam some time in 2017 and Ms. Sunny is planning to take her Cecchetti Grade VI teacher's exam also some time in 2017.

Attention all dancers:

Summer dance classes will include Tuesday night Cecchetti Classes for anyone planning to exmine in Cecchetti in the Fall. Thursday night will be a special Worship Dance Choreography class. It is also open to college students. Plans are to form a worship dance team from participants in the class. Call Ms. Sunny at 945-1044 or message her on Facebook if you have questions.

A registration form for Summer Classes will be available at the studio. Summer students will need to purchase a punch card which can be shared with another student or family member. The punch cards are $79.95 and they are good for seven 1.5 hr classes. Classes are arranged in 2 week sessions: June 7-16, July 5-13, and August 2-12. There are 12 classes in all but students can pick and choose their classes.

Thanks Skating Club

Thanks Central South Dakota Skating Club for the plug for our upcoming spring performance of "Frozen Revisited," scheduled for two performances Saturday, May 28, at 3pm and 7pm. Congratulations to Coach Clare on a fantastic performance of Happy Days by all her skaters, including McKayla Gunderson, Dadra Scott, and Rae and Walter McVey. Kudos!!!

Cecchetti Exams

Dancers traveling to Sioux Falls for exams Saturday, March 17, are Becca Brusven (GR 1), Makenzie Sarratt (GR 1), Sarah Nold (GR 2), Israel Kanz (GR 2), Josh Easter, and Sarah Easter. Sarah and Josh will be doing their Grade II Teacher exams. Ms. Sunny is now working on Cecchetti Grade VI and teaching Grade VI pointe to the intermediate and advanced pointe dancers.

Choreography begins!

We have begun practicing Frozen dances from the January show and are teaching three new dances. Beginning Pointe and Pre-Pointe are learning a new dance and so are Intermediate/Advanced Pointe. Plans are to teach another dance for the guys. It is really important that you make it to your classes not just to learn your dances, but to also work on your technique so you can grow and learn. So come to classes: 
- learn your dances so you know what you are doing
- work on your technique so you look good and know how to dance

Summer Dance Opportunities

Plans are to attend the Cecchetti Intensive Week at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls June 19-23 and possibly the Cecchetti International Teachers Seminar July 17-23. Please let Ms. Sunny know if you want to attend the Summer Intensive in Sioux Falls. This is a wonderful in-state opportunity and I would encourage Ballet IV and V to seriously think about going. Registration for Fall classes begins July 1st. Early Bird Discount 5% for first month's classes if paid by August 1st.
