Think Spring!

Cinderella is behind us and what an experience it was. I think it drained us all and left us needing a week off. We had not planned for that, so we were at the studio doing classes for the few who showed up.

I am very proud of the Hosanna Dancers and all the hard work they did getting ready for Cinderella. When asked to put some acting into their parts, they rose to occasion with great facial expressions and pantomime. It was definitely dance theater and the audience loved it.

We had thought our spring, end of the year, in-house performances would be some of the dances from Cinderella but the Lord made it real clear to me that He wants another worship dance performance. He began giving me songs to use the very next day. Save the date: June 1!

Gracie Zeeb will be examining in Sioux Falls for Cecchetti Grade IV this spring. Gracie has been working on this grade since the spring of last year and her technique definitely shows it.

The Cecchetti Intensive in June will be earlier: June 8-9. Cecchetti examinations will be held prior to the intensive and notification has to be given by April 1 for those who are approved. We currently have two preparing for June exams and one for the coming fall.

Pas de deux class has ended until fall. This class has helped our upper-level dancers learn some of the basics of partnering as well as strengthen their pointe work. We hope to also offer a variations class in the fall.

Two pre-pointe students have been approved for beginning pointe. They are Sheridan and Bellah Nickolas. This will require appointments at Dance line in Sioux Falls on a Saturday. Ms. Sarah and/or Ms. Sunny will accompany the girls for their fittings.

The theme for the Summer Dance Camps will be Frozen on the weeks of July 8-11 and July 15-18.

Nutcracker classes and practices will begin Tuesday nights in August for Ballet V  dancers and we will also begin Nutcracker casting in August!
Nutcracker performances will be during the after Thanksgiving weekend.

Fall classes will begin the first Tuesday after Labor Day. Look for the summer and fall schedule on our website. Please call 605-945-1044 or 605-220-1032 for information and registration forms or visit the website.

Beginning Ballet for Skaters -- Ages 8-12, Ages 13+

    Solid color leotard
    Pink or tan tights
    Ballet shoes, canvas or leather

Possible future class -- Young Skaters PreBallet/Movement class for Ages 5-7, 45-minute class

Dates to remember (also see the calendar for dates and times)

Dress rehearsal for everyone at the studio: Tuesday, May 28 from 5:30-8:00

End of year showcase: June 1 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Class attendance is extremely important. Make sure you add all classes and all dates for rehearsals, pictures, etc., to your calendar. Ballet class must not be viewed as choreography or just another style of dance but as your fundamental training for executing movement correctly and safely which takes consistent work in class.

We Encourage All Our Students to Prepare for Cecchetti Examinations This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and thoroughly learn the terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them develop as dancers. And bonus, you get a certificate as a memory of all the hard work, study, and effort.
If you or your student are interested in getting started with Cecchetti student examinations let us know. Ballet III and up are eligible to start working on Grade 1. Examinations take a lot of preparation, study, and commitment. (Normally 1-2 years is spent studying per grade. More as you progress through the grades.) Our studio is affiliated with the Cecchetti Council of America. We added the Cecchetti syllabus to our classes 6 years ago. All teachers are professionally examined by the CCA to hold certificates in the Cecchetti Method grades.
A Cecchetti Grade IV class is being taught on Thursday nights from 5:30-7:00 pm. A Cecchetti Grade III class is being taught on Tuesdays from 5:15-6:30pm. Even if you are not interested in doing exams, attending these classes is an excellent way for ballet IV/V to get another ballet class in and work hard on perfecting technique and getting more one on one corrections.

It's time to Dance!
So it says in Ecclesiastes 3:4 and as the summer heat gives way to cool air of fall, it's time to get back in ballet class and get in shape for the winter show, A Snow White Christmas, December 2nd & 3rd.

Some Hosanna Dancers never stopped dancing this summer. The studio offered two dance classes a week for two weeks in June, July, and August and threw in a couple of bonus weeks for serious dancers. Thursday night ballet classes were taught by Ms. Sunny and Thursday night Worship Dance classes were taught by Mr. Josh and Ms. Sarah. Dancers who attended learned "In Christ Alone," "Your Great Name," and "Not Forgotten." By the time this newsletter is published, we will have performed these dances for the residents at Golden Living Center on September 4th.

June 19-23, Ms. Sunny, Josh and Sarah Easter, and Deni Zeeb attended the Dance Gallery Cecchetti Ballet Intensive in Sioux Falls. The Easters took their Cecchetti Teacher's Grade III on June 23rd.

On July 16, Ms. Sunny, Josh and Sarah Easter drove to Holland, MI for the Cecchetti International Teachers Seminar July 17-23 for a week of classes and theory in all grades. We had a great time traveling and while in Holland. Josh got to room with a dance teacher from England and we all watched some really good pas de deux and men's classes. After watching the student performance on the 23rd, we hit the road to return home and had the good fortune to see the Blue Angels do flyovers when we drove through Sioux Falls.

Ms. Sunny returned to Sioux Falls August 18 & 19 for a coaching session in Cecchetti Grade VI for which she will be examing in spring.

Josh, Sarah and Ms. Sunny are planning to attend the Dance Network of South Dakota annual workshop on October 6, 7 7 8 in Rapid City and the Dance Gallery Fall Cecchetti Workshop in Sioux Falls October 21, 22 & 23. Any dancers interested in doing either of these workshops should let us know the first week of classes.

We are beginning to cast A Snow White Christmas but will not be able to complete and confirm casting as registrations are still coming in.

HD Newsletter, Fall Edition 2015

Hosanna Dance Newsletter
Fall Edition 2015 104 E Pleasant Pierre Artistic Director, Sunny Hannum Vol 3

Welcome to the 2015-2016 dance season
             Did I say 2016?
We pour so much activity into the 3 months of summer that June seems like an eternity ago. And I am as guilty as everyone else though I always take time for God and dance.

Studio News
Hosanna Dance did offer a few dance classes this summer. In June we had two weeks of Cecchetti Classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In July, we offered 3 weeks of conditioning, stretch, and modern classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

We had not planned to do classes in August because I wanted to have the studio floors redone. But we ended up continuing a conditioning class in Essential Body Alignment System (EBAS) and Cecchetti Grade V classes.

About 10 students took summer classes, including Emily Plumage who was preparing to leave for the University of Utah and will continue dancing there.

Finally, on Thursday, August 27th, Wood Works began sanding the studio floors promising to have the studio ready for us to start classes on September 1st.

Workshops & Continuing Education

Sarah and Josh Easter, Kat Bruns, and Eleanor Moleterno attended the Cecchetti Intensive at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls at the end of June with Ms. Sunny. At the end of the week, Sarah was excited to finally exam in Grade III after all her recovery efforts over the last couple of years.

Emily Plumage examined in Grade V in June and passed commend which is a very good rating. Miss Sunny is preparing to take an exam for Teacher's Grade V in October and Josh and Sarah Easter are preparing to take their exam for Teacher's Grade 1. We have traveled to Sioux Falls for coaching in these levels.

Ms Sunny and Ms Sarah drove 1900 miles round-trip to Holland, MI, for a week of classes and theory in all Cecchetti grades at the Cecchetti International Teacher Seminar Course July 5-11. We survived the demanding schedule and getting lost on a hiking trip to Lake Michigan. Sarah would say we were never lost because she had her GPS but I had my doubts at times.

Casting

We are not quite ready to cast the two leading females in Frozen: Beware the Frozen Heart until after the first week of classes. Ms Sunny has a pretty good idea of who they will be but she is waiting for all the registrations to come in and to look at potential dancers for commitment and attitude.

Preliminary Cast for Beware the Frozen Heart

Anna: TBA
Kristoff: Josh
Hans: Ben
Olaf: TBA

Marshmallow/Giant Snowman: TBA

See the calendar for class holidays & performance dates & rehearsals.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a strong mind.
