Dancers & Parents

Girls- Make sure you have clean pink tights without holes or runs. It is always good to have an additional backup pair. Hair should of course be in a nice neat and sleek ballet bun.

Classes - Costuming (make sure you have everything you need)

PreBallet - you will wear your class color leotard (light pink), pink tights, pink ballet shoes, and either a black ballet skirt or your class color of light pink. Ballet I - you will wear your class color leotard (hot pink), pink tights, pink ballet shoes, and either a black ballet skirt or your class color of hot pink. Ballet II - you will wear your class color leotard (powder blue), pink tights, tap shoes, and either a black ballet skirt or your class color of powder blue. Guys will wear a light blue shirt, black pants, and tap shoes. Ballet III - you will wear your class color leotard (yellow), pink tights, pink ballet shoes, and either a black ballet skirt or your class color. Beginning Modern - you will wear a black leotard, a red skirt (provided by the studio), and have your tights rolled up above ankles with bare feet. Ballet IV - you will wear a black leotard, black wrap ballet skirt, and pink tights rolled up nicely with bare feet. PrePointe/Beg Pointe - you will wear a black leotard, your blue "tunic" (from Cinderella), pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Ballet V - you will wear a white unitard layer (from Deliver/Prince of Egypt) with a blue tunic (from Esther). Those that have those pieces will need to bring them. We are borrowing some from other dancers for dancers that don't have them. Pink tights rolled up with bare feet or modern or lyrical shoes. Guys will wear a royal blue shirt, white pants, and bare feet. Int/Adv Pointe - you will wear a black leotard, black dance shorts, and your pointe shoes with pink tights to match. Int/Adv Modern - you will wear a black leotard with solid black capri leggings, tights rolled up, bare feet. You will wear your red cropped shirt with a black wrap skirt in one piece and a red skirt (provided by the studio) in the other piece. Guys will wear a red shirt, black pants, and bare feet. Cecchetti IV and senior dancers - you are working with Ms.Sarah on costumes.

Dates and Times!

Parents: let us know if you are available to volunteer as a greeter, dressing room monitor, or a class monitor for pre-ballet, ballet I, or ballet II.

↣ Dress Rehearsal at the studio for all performing classes -- May 28 Rehearsal for all is from 5:30-7:00pm (make sure you are here at least 10 minutes early so we can start on time) - Girls will use Studio 2 (smaller studio) as their dressing room/staging area. - Guys, their usual dressing room.
↣ Performances at Hosanna Dance -- June 1 Shows are at 2:00pm (doors open to the public at 1:30 pm) -- dancers 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
and 7:00 pm (doors open to the public at 6:30 pm) -- dancers 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm

↣ Performance Day: Dancers Schedule -- 2 pm performance Dancers, be at the studio 12:30-12:45 to get yourself set up in the staging/dressing area. Dancers must be ready for instructors by 1pm for notes and warmup. Dancers must stay in the staging/changing areas at 1:30 and cannot run around the building.* -- 7 pm performance Dancers, be at the studio at 5:45 to get yourself in your spot in time for warmup & notes. Dancers must be ready for instructors by 6pm. Dancers must stay in the staging/changing areas at 1:30 and cannot run around the building.* * Young dancers -- Bring a book or activity to keep occupied after warm-up & notes. Hosanna in the highest! Wherever the King is, there is the kingdom...

This had to be the busiest October Hosanna dance has ever seen with two dance workshops, Cecchetti exams for teachers and students, and pointe shoe fittings in Sioux Falls for 5 beginning pointe students.

It has been extremely difficult to focus on choreography for Frozen and we have only a little over 2 months until performances. A few dances are completed for the lower levels but our advanced dances are not.

It will be extremely important for parents to make sure their dancers make it to their classes. With the holiday season upon us, I know that it will be a challenge.

Costumes are ordered but many are not paid for. Please check the costume list at the studio to see if you need to pay for a costume. I will not be able to hand out costumes to students whose costumes are not paid for.

I am pleased to announce that our student numbers have increased significantly this year. Logan of Pumba fame has returned to do the role of Olaf.

Ms. Sunny passed a very difficult Cecchetti grade V teacher's exam October 16. Josh and Sarah Easter passed their Cecchetti grade 1 teacher's exams and Sarah Nold passed her grade 1 student exam.

Students attending all or part of the Cecchetti Fall Intensive October 17 & 18 at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls were Kat Bruns, Sarah Nold, McKayla Gunderson, Deni Zeeb, and Ashlynn Geuther.

Students who got fitted for their first pair of pointe shoes this fall at Dance Line in Sioux Falls were Savannah Shrake, McKayla Gunderson, Deni Zeeb, Ashlynn Geuther, and Jessica Hays. Thanks Ms. Sarah for getting these girls ready for pointe.

Hosanna Dancers who attended the Dance Network SD workshop October 2-4 in Pierre were Josh and Sarah Easter, Becca Brusven and McKayla Gunderson.

A line from the opening song from a show I danced in at Jones Beach in 1967 mentions "another opening, another show" and "all week we rehearse and rehearse..."

We are getting ready for another opening as we put the finishing touches on the upper level dances for The Deliver. Like Lion King, the choreography for this show is very stylized. Where Lion King was African Savannah, The Deliverer is Egyptian and Jewish. Both had elements of ballet but not classical.

Costuming has been challenging as the costume companies focus on the bling and revealing costumes of today's dance styles. We have gone to the internet and to worship DJ ance catalogs for many of the costumes.

It's very timely that we are doing a show that focuses on the deliverance of God's chosen people, the Israelites, as time draws near for another deliverer.

Dress rehearsal & performances are in a month. Make sure you have everything you will need -- new tights in the correct color(s), shoes, undergarments, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, and Ballet II/III will continue to have their regular class times Monday nights in May.

Tuesday Night Run-throughs for The Deliverer will only be for Ballet II/III, Ballet IV & Ballet V.

Happy New Year!

What a great ending to a great year! Thanks to everyone who made The Greatest Gift of All a huge success but most of all thanks to the Lord whose hand was all over it. I didn’t think our shows could get any better than He Lives in You: Lion King but they just keep exceeding wildest expectations. Even more rewarding is seeing young dancers who just keep improving.

Thank you for all your gifts in December!

We have already begun planning The Deliverer: Prince of Egypt and will soon be posting costume fees which will be due by February 1^st. This show will follow the theme of Prince of Egypt so there won’t be so many variety dances as there were in our Nutcracker. We did this show in 2007 with a focus on the story of the Jewish people. This will be an entirely new production but it does tell the same story.

We have been blessed over the Christmas break with tango classes taught by Alex Plumage and will begin Shotokan Karate classes January 14th taught by Richard Hathaway that will continue twice a week for the rest of the year. They are 2-hour classes Wednesday and Friday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. for age 10-adult. SPACE IS STILL AVAILABLE IN THIS CLASS.

We will once again be offering summer Cecchetti classes in June for students planning to exam during the week of the Cecchetti Summer Intensive June 22-27.

Ms. Sunny is planning to attend the Cecchetti Intensive at Dance Gallery in late June (dates TBA) and the teacher’s seminar at the Cecchetti International Summer School July 5-11 in Holland, MI, and is hoping that some advanced students will join her ☺.

We plan to offer summer modern and ballet for dancers wishing to stay in dance shape and will post a schedule in May for summer classes. We are also hoping to offer some summer dance camps for preschool and kindergarten children. These would be two-week sessions of one hour a week.

Two down and one to go, workshops that is.  We enjoyed a wonderful weekend of dance with Ballet Magnificat in Sioux Falls October 10, 11 & 12 and the following weekend, five Hosanna dancers and Ms. Sunny all passed their Cecchetti exams with a “pass commend.”  We will be traveling to Mitchell the weekend of October 24 & 25^th for the Dance Network of South Dakota classes.

Most of the dances for the December performance of Greatest Gift of All are needing completion and need a lot of practice.  Because of that we are not starting run through rehearsals until Monday, November 17^th, from 6 to 8 p.m.  This will still give us 3 run through practices and the dress rehearsal to pull the show together. 

Remember all your costumes need to be paid for and class fees paid up to date, before you can take costumes home.  Costumes will be handed out at regular class times as soon as they all have arrived.  The requested arrival date is November 21^st so costumes will be given out that week.

We will begin working on our June performance of Prince of Egypt (The Deliverer) in January.  The first week of January we will take registrations for the second half year.  This would be a good time for children to sign up who missed the fall signup.  No registrations will be taken after January 30 until July 1^st.

We will once again be offering summer Cecchetti classes in June for students planning to take exams during the week of the Cecchetti Summer Intensive June 22 -27^th.

  

Ms. Sunny is planning to attend the teacher’s seminar at the Cecchetti International Summer School July 5 -11 in Holland. Michigan, and the Ballet Magnificat Teachers Workshop July 11-18 in Jackson, Mississippi.

   

The Easters may be offering some summer dance classes both modern and ballet for dancers wishing to stay in  dance shape over the summer.  That schedule has not yet been set.

Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

   After a wonderful summer of dance intensives, summer classes, and worship dance, some of us are ready for fall and excited about what God has in store for Hosanna Dance and how He plans to use us.

   Parents and Students, please be sure to fill out your registration form the first week of dance if you have not already done so.  ALSO, WE WILL BE TAKING MEASUREMENTS FOR COSTUMES FOR THE  DECEMBER SHOWCASE RIGHT AWAY IN SEPTEMBER.  Costumes will be ordered by October 1^st.

   In spite of the current fad of treating dance like a competition sport, Hosanna Dance continues to maintain a high standard for ballet as an art form. BALLET IS PAINTING AND POETRY IN MOTION.  Dancers are athletes but they primarily compete with themselves in an attempt to master the technique and execute difficult steps. Studying ballet does improve performance in sports like karate, gymnastics, ice skating, basketball, soccer and football testified to by black belt karate students who have studied with me. 

   The Dramatic Truth Summer Intensive was the best we have been to in three years with excellent modern and ballet teachers.  Ian Poulis of Kansas City Ballet also now teaches at Dramatic Truth.  He is a Kirov Academy graduate and the grace, beauty, and athleticism of his classes were awe inspiring.  At only 28 years old, he is already an excellent teacher as was his wife, Paraguayan born, Fabiana Poulis.
   We so enjoyed Durell Comedy and Tobin James’ modern classes.  Needless to say, their classes were moving and took us through both Limon and Graham techniques.  Tobin had been in the original Lion King on Broadway so we were very interested in her teaching since we are planning to do Lion King in the spring.

   We will also be doing a showcase Thursday, December 19^th, at 7 p.m. at Riggs Theater. It will once again be a Fine Arts Booster Club fundraiser.  It will be a medley of  Christian and Christmas music focusing on Christ from creation to His return.  We will begin working on choreography right away in September.
Showcase Costume Order Deadline is October 1st!

   Hosanna Dancers joined several worship teams from Pierre and Rapid City churches on August 18^th in Steamboat Park to do spontaneous worship dance for several hours.  This type of lead and follow dancing works well with large groups who haven’t had rehearsal time.  It is a style we have picked up at our summer dance sessions in KC.

  Josh Easter, Sarah Easter, and Ms. Sunny also performed Shekinah in a Dramatic Truth showcase in July. Praise the Lord!!!

Performance Guidelines

Stay organized. Be on time.

The week before, be sure to gather everything that will be needed and put it in your dance bag. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, tights, makeup, hair supplies (no glitter sprays please unless your costuming specifically calls for it). If you don't know how to make a ballet bun (using bobby pins and/or hairpins) please speak with Ms. Sunny, Sarah, or Becca and they can give you some tips.

Label all belongings: costumes, accessories, tights, and shoes. All strings in ballet shoes should be knotted, cut to about an inch in length, and tucked into the shoes so they cannot be seen.

REMEMBER, treat dress rehearsal as a performance. Wear the correct costumes, tights, undergarments, shoes, hair, etc. Have your hair in a proper ballet bun (no mussy buns, bouncy sock buns, ponytails, dangling hair, or side tendrils). Very short hair needs to be pinned back. Avoid glitter sprays.

Keep all your personal items in one area – a bag or backpack is very helpful for younger students. If you have a lot of costumes and accessories a small laundry hamper may help. Place costumes in a garment bag for travel.

Female dancers will be expected to bring at least one extra pair of tights in case of runs or tears. Girls do not wear underwear under tights - your tights are your underwear. Bras should be nude-colored and if possible, have clear straps. Undergarments should not be visible! For students in multiple dances, a nude camisole leotard is recommended. This helps to avoid feeling uncomfortable during quick changes. 

Guys wear a dance belt.

No nail polish, watches, bracelets/ankle bracelets, rings, necklaces, or other jewelry. A simple stud earring may be allowed but you must first ask your instructor for that particular costume. Avoid glitter sprays.

Do not touch or move props that are not yours. If you use a prop, make sure you know where it is before each performance. Do not play around with your props. Respect other students’ space and property in the dressing rooms. Stay organized and keep your things together.

Get a good rest! You need your body and your brain to be in tip-top shape.

Be on time so you have plenty of time to dress, warm up, and be ready for any pre-performance notes or practice. Do not miss warm-up and notes because of hair or makeup. Use the restroom upon arrival. Do not hold up the bathroom for those who need it by using it as your personal dressing room. Dressing rooms will be assigned by classes. Guys have a separate room.

Pay attention to when you are supposed to be on stage and be available on time. Know your quick changes! Treat dress rehearsal as a performance and use it to make sure everything works, looks good, and sort out any mid-performance costume issues. 

Backstage assistants will help the young children be ready for their cues. Stay in your designated area so people are not running around looking for you. Do not go into the auditorium. Students and helpers must remain backstage/in dressing rooms during performance nights. No running in and out of the auditorium during performances.

Pick up after yourself – everyone tends to move very quickly through the backstage area and clutter is dangerous.  Keep your things together and not strewn around the dressing room. Do not throw costumes or any accessories on the floor. Keep clothes hung up or in your bag or hamper not on the floor.

At the theater, the dressing room is for changing clothes, not the restroom in the dressing room. Please keep the restroom open for people that need to use it.

If you create garbage and there’s no trash can, tuck it into your dance bag to dispose of later. Do not throw papers, tissues, wrappers, or anything else on the floor. Pick up after yourself!

Costumes

Getting ready for performances: Respect your costumes! When you finish a piece, your costume should be hung up or placed in your "basket." NEVER throw your costume on the floor and allow others to trample on it! If you have a quick change, you may lay it over a chair or drape it on a hanger and come back to hang up later... but take care to make sure it is protected (and doesn't get lost) in that short time. -- a small laundry basket may help you keep your things together and not strewn around the dressing room -- 

If performing more than once, organize everything all over again after the first performance, before leaving, so you are ready for the next performance either later that day or the next day. Check over everything all over again when you get back to make sure all is still where it should be. 

After the final performance, always gather up all your costumes & their bags, accessories, shoes, and anything else you brought and take home. Return borrowed items. Check the gift tables. Put garbage in a garbage can. Pick up after yourself!!!

Keep track of your things and RETURN anything that you borrowed from another dancer or belongs to the studio.

Hair

Wear hair in a nice sleek ballet bun or possibly a French twist.

It should continue the shape of your head rather than stick out away from the head. Buns should be as flat against the head as possible. It is acceptable to have a large bun however it should not be sticking out in a “knobby” manner.

No messy buns, sock buns, or “door knob-looking” buns, dangling tendrils, or prom hair. Hair should be neat, clean, secure, smoothed back and off the face and neck.

Use hairspray to keep hair smoothed back and control flyaways. You will need hair elastics and bobby pins or hairpins. Do not use hair clips, barrettes, or scrunchies to make your bun.

Low bun, high bun, or French twist may depend on your costume accessories/hats/headpieces. Ask your teacher.

Ask Ms. Sunny, Sarah, or Becca for help if you are having trouble getting your hair into a ballet bun.

~  THEATRE PERFORMANCES ~

DRESS REHEARSAL

Dress Rehearsals at Riggs Theatre are 5:30-8:00 pm

Be at the theater around 5pm. Find your dressing room and get organized.

Stage Makeup - brows, eyes,
cheeks, lips. The left eye shows
liner, shadow, mascara.

Be on stage in your class clothes - leotard, tights, shoes, and secure ballet bun - by 5:30 for notes and warm-up. Costumes will be put on after warm-up.

And REMEMBER treat dress rehearsal as a performance. Wear the correct costumes, tights, undergarments, shoes, hair, etc. This is where you make sure everything works, looks good, and you can sort out any mid-performance costume issues. Keep costumes off the floor!! Read PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES.

Little tidbit… the professional photographers often take performance photos during dress rehearsal. 😊

PERFORMANCE DAY

Performances at Riggs Theatre at 2 p.m. afternoon matinee & 7 p.m. evening performance

Dancers: Be at the theater at noon for the first performance. Be back at the theater at 5:00 for the second performance.

➤ Be at the theater at 12:00 pm to get organized in dressing rooms, finish hair, makeup, etc. if not done already.

   Everyone be on stage by 12:30 pm for notes and warm-up and any extra practices that you may need. If hair/makeup is not done you will need to stop and go back to it later.

   Doors open to the public at 1:00 pm so stay backstage. 

   Costumes on at 1:30 pm. 

   Curtain at 2:00 pm.

➤ Break 3:30-5:00 pm

➤ Be back at the theater at 5:00. Make sure everything you need is reorganized and in its place. Keep the dressing rooms picked up. If you haven't done so this would be a good time to put recital gifts for classmates out on the tables.

   Makeup/hair redo or touch-ups at 5:00 pm.

   Be on stage in class clothes at 5:30 pm for notes and warm-up.

   Doors open at 6:00 pm so stay backstage.

   Costumes on at 6:30 pm. Curtain at 7:00 pm.

➤  After: Check the gift tables out front, pick up all your costumes/accessories/shoes, pick up after yourself. Return borrowed items. Pack up! See you back at classes!
