Think Spring!

Cinderella is behind us and what an experience it was. I think it drained us all and left us needing a week off. We had not planned for that, so we were at the studio doing classes for the few who showed up.

I am very proud of the Hosanna Dancers and all the hard work they did getting ready for Cinderella. When asked to put some acting into their parts, they rose to occasion with great facial expressions and pantomime. It was definitely dance theater and the audience loved it.

We had thought our spring, end of the year, in-house performances would be some of the dances from Cinderella but the Lord made it real clear to me that He wants another worship dance performance. He began giving me songs to use the very next day. Save the date: June 1!

Gracie Zeeb will be examining in Sioux Falls for Cecchetti Grade IV this spring. Gracie has been working on this grade since the spring of last year and her technique definitely shows it.

The Cecchetti Intensive in June will be earlier: June 8-9. Cecchetti examinations will be held prior to the intensive and notification has to be given by April 1 for those who are approved. We currently have two preparing for June exams and one for the coming fall.

Pas de deux class has ended until fall. This class has helped our upper-level dancers learn some of the basics of partnering as well as strengthen their pointe work. We hope to also offer a variations class in the fall.

Two pre-pointe students have been approved for beginning pointe. They are Sheridan and Bellah Nickolas. This will require appointments at Dance line in Sioux Falls on a Saturday. Ms. Sarah and/or Ms. Sunny will accompany the girls for their fittings.

The theme for the Summer Dance Camps will be Frozen on the weeks of July 8-11 and July 15-18.

Nutcracker classes and practices will begin Tuesday nights in August for Ballet V  dancers and we will also begin Nutcracker casting in August!
Nutcracker performances will be during the after Thanksgiving weekend.

Fall classes will begin the first Tuesday after Labor Day. Look for the summer and fall schedule on our website. Please call 605-945-1044 or 605-220-1032 for information and registration forms or visit the website.

    Solid color leotard
    Pink or tan tights
    Ballet shoes, canvas or leather

Possible future class -- Young Skaters PreBallet/Movement class for Ages 5-7, 45-minute class

Dates to remember (also see the calendar for dates and times)

Dress rehearsal for everyone at the studio: Tuesday, May 28 from 5:30-8:00

End of year showcase: June 1 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Class attendance is extremely important. Make sure you add all classes and all dates for rehearsals, pictures, etc., to your calendar. Ballet class must not be viewed as choreography or just another style of dance but as your fundamental training for executing movement correctly and safely which takes consistent work in class.

We Encourage All Our Students to Prepare for Cecchetti Examinations This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and thoroughly learn the terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them develop as dancers. And bonus, you get a certificate as a memory of all the hard work, study, and effort.
If you or your student are interested in getting started with Cecchetti student examinations let us know. Ballet III and up are eligible to start working on Grade 1. Examinations take a lot of preparation, study, and commitment. (Normally 1-2 years is spent studying per grade. More as you progress through the grades.) Our studio is affiliated with the Cecchetti Council of America. We added the Cecchetti syllabus to our classes 6 years ago. All teachers are professionally examined by the CCA to hold certificates in the Cecchetti Method grades.
A Cecchetti Grade IV class is being taught on Thursday nights from 5:30-7:00 pm. A Cecchetti Grade III class is being taught on Tuesdays from 5:15-6:30pm. Even if you are not interested in doing exams, attending these classes is an excellent way for ballet IV/V to get another ballet class in and work hard on perfecting technique and getting more one on one corrections.

New Year Edition 2018 119 N Deadwood St Ft Pierre Artistic Director, Sunny Hannum Vol 1

A Happy Belated New Year!
Here we are already a month into the New Year and we haven’t brought you up to date on our spring plans. We are doing our spring performances in the studio on our in-house stage. This is another exciting new experience for us and one of the reasons we relocated to the new space.

As some of you know, we have struggled every spring finding a date early enough for our missions bound students and when Riggs Theater is available - a near impossibility. This fact definitely affected our casting for Esther last spring.

We have some work to do on the stage area to prepare the surface and need to add some lighting but will gear our performance to be simpler than the lavish one we do for our dance theater performances at Riggs Theater.

We plan to do a performance entirely of worship dances. This performance has been on our bucket list for a while and should fit perfectly on our studio stage. The bonus will be having worship dances available for any church or concert that want us over the summer.

We have not yet picked our next winter show but it will once again be a dance theater performance at Riggs Theater. We are currently researching possibilities including Cinderella. We were very pleased with the response to our “Greatest Gift of All” performances in January. They were very well received with bigger audiences than in the past in spite of a cold weekend.

Todd Thompson graced us with his beautiful photography during dress rehearsal and we will be preparing a display of his photos soon. Our faithful videographer came out of retirement to give us very good video of the matinee performance. A showing was held for Ballet IV and V on January 20th at the Hilmoe’s home and refreshments were served.

We offer Cecchetti syllabus classes for those interested in progressing as a dancer and who take more than one ballet class a week. We have a Grade IV class going and would like to have a Grade I class for those that would like to get started with Cecchetti examinations or would like to work on perfecting their technique. So please sign up! Ask Gracie Zeeb and Becca Brusven about how Cecchetti has helped them become better dancers!

We encourage all our students to try Cecchetti examinations!
This is such an excellent way for students to become technically proficient and learn the theory and terminology of ballet. There is something about preparing for an exam that makes students work harder and helps them progress as dancers.

Ms Sunny, Josh, and Sarah will be attending the Cecchetti Intensive June 17-21 at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls. Parents, we will let you know when registration opens. When information and brochure are available they can be found by going online to www.dancegallerysd.com/workshops.
We usually rent a couple rooms at Home 2 Suites and split the cost. Tuition to the workshop is very reasonable.

We have added a few new classes since the show. A Cecchetti Grade IV class is being offered Monday nights at 5:30 pm. On Tuesday night is a Variations class at 5:30pm. Adult Ballet is being offered Thursday night at 7pm and Adult/Youth Line Dance at 7pm Friday night. On Saturday at 10 am a Strength & Conditioning class. In order to attend the Friday or Saturday classes please contact us in advance to register.

Hosanna in the highest! Wherever the King is, there is the kingdom...

This had to be the busiest October Hosanna dance has ever seen with two dance workshops, Cecchetti exams for teachers and students, and pointe shoe fittings in Sioux Falls for 5 beginning pointe students.

It has been extremely difficult to focus on choreography for Frozen and we have only a little over 2 months until performances. A few dances are completed for the lower levels but our advanced dances are not.

It will be extremely important for parents to make sure their dancers make it to their classes. With the holiday season upon us, I know that it will be a challenge.

Costumes are ordered but many are not paid for. Please check the costume list at the studio to see if you need to pay for a costume. I will not be able to hand out costumes to students whose costumes are not paid for.

I am pleased to announce that our student numbers have increased significantly this year. Logan of Pumba fame has returned to do the role of Olaf.

Ms. Sunny passed a very difficult Cecchetti grade V teacher's exam October 16. Josh and Sarah Easter passed their Cecchetti grade 1 teacher's exams and Sarah Nold passed her grade 1 student exam.
Students attending all or part of the Cecchetti Fall Intensive October 17 & 18 at Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls were Kat Bruns, Sarah Nold, McKayla Gunderson, Deni Zeeb, and Ashlynn Geuther.

Students who got fitted for their first pair of pointe shoes this fall at Dance Line in Sioux Falls were Savannah Shrake, McKayla Gunderson, Deni Zeeb, Ashlynn Geuther, and Jessica Hays. Thanks Ms. Sarah for getting these girls ready for pointe.

Hosanna Dancers who attended the Dance Network SD workshop October 2-4 in Pierre were Josh and Sarah Easter, Becca Brusven and McKayla Gunderson.

Two down and one to go, workshops that is.  We enjoyed a wonderful weekend of dance with Ballet Magnificat in Sioux Falls October 10, 11 & 12 and the following weekend, five Hosanna dancers and Ms. Sunny all passed their Cecchetti exams with a “pass commend.”  We will be traveling to Mitchell the weekend of October 24 & 25th for the Dance Network of South Dakota classes.

Most of the dances for the December performance of Greatest Gift of All are needing completion and need a lot of practice.  Because of that we are not starting run through rehearsals until Monday, November 17th, from 6 to 8 p.m.  This will still give us 3 run through practices and the dress rehearsal to pull the show together.

Remember all your costumes need to be paid for and class fees paid up to date, before you can take costumes home.  Costumes will be handed out at regular class times as soon as they all have arrived.  The requested arrival date is November 21st so costumes will be given out that week.

We will begin working on our June performance of Prince of Egypt (The Deliverer) in January.  The first week of January we will take registrations for the second half year.  This would be a good time for children to sign up who missed the fall signup.  No registrations will be taken after January 30 until July 1st.

We will once again be offering summer Cecchetti classes in June for students planning to take exams during the week of the Cecchetti Summer Intensive June 22 -27th.

Ms. Sunny is planning to attend the teacher’s seminar at the Cecchetti International Summer School July 5 -11 in Holland. Michigan, and the Ballet Magnificat Teachers Workshop July 11-18 in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Easters may be offering some summer dance classes both modern and ballet for dancers wishing to stay in  dance shape over the summer.  That schedule has not yet been set.

We are also hoping to offer some summer dance camps for preschool and kindergarten children.  These would be two week sessions of one hour a week.

We basked in the afterglow all summer of our successful He Lives In You (Lion King)

Rehearsals began for The Greatest Gift of All (Nutcracker) the first Tuesday of August for advanced dancers, a class of 12 female and 2 male dancers. Hosanna Dance last performed Gift in December 2010.  We will be adding new dances and changing some this year.

New dancers are signed up in all levels and some dancers have moved up to the next level.  All levels will once again be studying the Cecchetti method as part of their training. Several advanced dancers will be examining in different Cecchetti grades in October and Ms. Sunny will be examining in Teacher’s Grade 4.

Twenty dancers participated in summer dance taught by Sarah and Josh Easter.  Classes included Cecchetti, ballet technique, Horton modern, pointe barre, foot and ankle exercises, and stretch classes. Kudos, Josh and Sarah!  We look forward to more teaching from you.

Kat Bruns, Emily Plumage, Josh and Sarah Easter, Israel Kanz and Ms. Sunny attended the Cecchetti Summer Ballet Intensive June 24th - 27th in Sioux Falls at Dance Gallery. Excellent classes were taught in all levels of the Cecchetti method, jazz, modern, hip hop, lyrical, and ballroom. Teachers were from Chicago and North Carolina.

Emily Plumage attended Ballet Magnificat summer intensive where she landed a solo in their student gala performance and also auditioned for the Belhaven College dance program. Go, Emily!!!

Fall Edition 2013 104 E Pleasant Pierre Artistic Director, Sunny Holloway Vol 4

Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

After a wonderful summer of dance intensives, summer classes, and worship dance, some of us are ready for fall and excited about what God has in store for Hosanna Dance and how He plans to use us.

Parents and Students, please be sure to fill out your registration form the first week of dance if you have not already done so.  ALSO, WE WILL BE TAKING MEASUREMENTS FOR COSTUMES FOR THE  DECEMBER SHOWCASE RIGHT AWAY IN SEPTEMBER.  Costumes will be ordered by October 1st.

In spite of the current fad of treating dance like a competition sport, Hosanna Dance continues to maintain a high standard for ballet as an art form. BALLET IS PAINTING AND POETRY IN MOTION.  Dancers are athletes but they primarily compete with themselves in an attempt to master the technique and execute difficult steps. Studying ballet does improve performance in sports like karate, gymnastics, ice skating, basketball, soccer and football testified to by black belt karate students who have studied with me.

The Dramatic Truth Summer Intensive was the best we have been to in three years with excellent modern and ballet teachers.  Ian Poulis of Kansas City Ballet also now teaches at Dramatic Truth.  He is a Kirov Academy graduate and the grace, beauty, and athleticism of his classes were awe inspiring.  At only 28 years old, he is already an excellent teacher as was his wife, Paraguayan born, Fabiana Poulis.
We so enjoyed Durell Comedy and Tobin James’ modern classes.  Needless to say, their classes were moving and took us through both Limon and Graham techniques.  Tobin had been in the original Lion King on Broadway so we were very interested in her teaching since we are planning to do Lion King in the spring.

We will also be doing a showcase Thursday, December 19th, at 7 p.m. at Riggs Theater. It will once again be a Fine Arts Booster Club fundraiser.  It will be a medley of  Christian and Christmas music focusing on Christ from creation to His return.  We will begin working on choreography right away in September.
Showcase Costume Order Deadline is October 1st!

Hosanna Dancers joined several worship teams from Pierre and Rapid City churches on August 18th in Steamboat Park to do spontaneous worship dance for several hours.  This type of lead and follow dancing works well with large groups who haven’t had rehearsal time.  It is a style we have picked up at our summer dance sessions in KC.

Josh Easter, Sarah Easter, and Ms. Sunny also performed Shekinah in a Dramatic Truth showcase in July. Praise the Lord!!!

Praise the Lord for He has done great things!  What a beautiful summer we are having!  Praise God for the rain in the natural and in the Spirit!

The Hosanna Dancers joined the worship team at New Life Assembly to dance during the West River Aglow Retreat with speaker, Patty Harrington.  The King Is Coming, Shekinah, and Your Great Name were a blessing to the Lord, dancers and viewers alike. Thank you Abbey Nold, Kylie Varns, Annie Varns, Sarah Nold, Sarah Easter and Josh Easter for helping Ms. Sunny bring freedom with dance.  Many wonderful healings were received through worship, word and prayer.

There are a few changes in the fall schedule with all the lower levels on Monday nights and advanced ballet at 5:30 on Tuesday nights followed by pas de deux class.  So please check the schedule closely to see where your child fits in.  Only advanced students who are strong enough on pointe will be allowed to take pas de deux on pointe.

Other Ballet V students with only one year of pointe may be eligible for pas de deux classes upon approval by Ms. Sunny.  Please discuss before enrolling in pas de deux. It looks like the upcoming Lion King performance will have more pas de deux and pointe than Ms. Sunny first thought.

Ms. Sunny, Josh and Sarah Easter had a blast at the Cecchetti Summer Intensive in Sioux Falls.  Besides ballet classes, they had some really fun classes in hip hop, lyrical, jazz, and Latin jazz.  Material learned there will be shared in the next summer session and all classes. Dancers wishing to become certified in the Cecchetti method should visit with Ms. Sunny at registration.

The Easters and Ms. Sunny will leave July 7 for Kansas City where they are praying for an equally wonderful time of dance and learning new material.  Josh will have the opportunity to take pas de deux classes from Ian Poulis of Kansas City Ballet.  Durell Comedy of Limon Dance Company is also one of the guest teachers.
